This network seeks to integrate, at the European level, veterinary sciences, public health and research on foodstuffs to boost the prevention and control of zoonoses, including foodborne diseases.
Naturally transmissible diseases from animals to humans, called zoonoses, are a major public health problem. Such diseases, especially when they are foodborne, have considerable social and financial consequences in Europe and need to be studied within the general framework of the food chain.
It is therefore a European network of excellence gathering 16 institutes, 8 of which specialise in veterinary research and the other half in public health, distributed throughout 10 countries. Coordinated by Afssa, Med-Vet-Net was selected by the European Commission in 2003 and received major funding for 5 years from 2004.
