Animal diseases The diseases have been grouped into three categories: epizootic diseases concerning animals only, mainly foodborne zoonotic animal diseases (listeriosis type), mainly non-foodborne zoonotic animal diseases (rabies type).
An epizootic is a disease that affects all of a particular species of animal within a region of varying size. A zoonosis is a transmissible disease caused by a microbe (virus or bacterium), a parasite (helminth, fungus, protozoan) or a prion capable of infecting at least one vertebrate (usually a mammal or bird, sometimes a fish or reptile) and humans, the transmission occurring from either animal to human or vice-versa.
