Food contact materials

During its life cycle, food may come into contact with containers (pots, packaging, tanks), tools, utensils and surfaces used during the preparation and/or storage of foodstuffs.

The component materials of these objects are highly diverse in nature: glass, cardboard, metal, plastic, etc. These materials may release substances into the food with which they are in contact, therefore their composition must comply with strict rules guaranteeing food health safety (foodstuffs and water).
The Agency takes part in the assessment of risks arising from materials intended for contact with food. This assessment is, by nature, multidisciplinary as it covers issues ranging from the chemical composition of materials to manufacturing processes, including the physical and chemical processes which they may undergo during their existence.

This assessment is conducted by the committee of experts specialising in Food contact materials which is part of the physico-chemical risk assessment unit of the health and nutritional risk assessment department.
