National study of PCB impregnation Consumption of freshwater fish and PCB levels: launch of a national study
Are consumers of river fish more exposed to PCBs than the general population?
In order to answer this question, AFSSA is coordinating a “PCB impregnation" study, in partnership with the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS).
The survey, which began in April 2009, involves 629 households of amateur and professionals anglers (612 amateur angler households and 17 professional angler households) in 6 fishing areas, some contaminated with PCBs and others uncontaminated. The blood PCB levels (impregnation) and eating habits of the participants, irrespective of whether they consume river fish, will be analysed. The level of contamination of fish in these fishing areas will also be measured.
Several months of collecting and analysing data will lead to detailed recommendations as to safe consumption frequencies for humans. These will be defined according to fish species and by target population and will be available in early 2011.
Funded by the French Ministry of Health, this study is part of the broader national PCB action plan launched in February 2008 by the Ministries of ecology, agriculture and health for more effective management of PCB-related risks. It is supported by the French national fishing federation (FNPF) as well as the National committee of professional freshwater fishing (CONAPPED) which have agreed to provide information on their members.
