The Risk Assessment Department is, together with the Regulated Products Department and the French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products, the Agency's risk assessment and scientific expertise coordination body.
It assesses the nutritional and health risks and benefits of food, health risks in environmental and occupational health, and risks to animal health and nutrition.
Expertise and assessment
As part of its mission, the Risk Assessment Department conducts collective expert appraisals that allow ANSES to issue opinions and recommendations, and publish reports. Its work forms the scientific basis of decisions taken by public health authorities: regulatory measures, approvals for products, practices, preventive measures, etc.
It is supported by Expert Committees and other groups of experts set up by the Agency, by the scientific expertise available to it among its staff, and by the work of its 12 reference and research laboratories. It also gathers all the information required for its missions.
Methods, studies and observatories
It provides methodological support and conducts studies and surveys on nutrition, microbiology and animal health, or on the determining factors of human exposure to substances, among other topics.
It manages databases in its field of competence, such as CONTAMINE and CIQUAL (a table of the nutritional composition of foods) for example.
It coordinates or contributes to networks, observatories and other projects, such as the French Observatory of Pesticide Residues (ORP), the French Observatory of Food Quality (OQALI), the National Network for Monitoring and Prevention of Occupational Diseases (RNV3P) and "CMR Substitution" (supporting the process of substitution, by professionals and other stakeholders involved in prevention, of carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic chemical substances).
It contributes to national, European and international studies through research programmes and evaluation and training missions.
It assesses the nutritional and health risks and benefits of food, health risks in environmental and occupational health, and risks to animal health and nutrition.
