In other cases, risk assessments either could not be finalised due to insufficient data or were not possible because of a lack of data. These conclusions are mainly based on work conducted over the last few years to establish a new EU-level guideline document which will effectively account for all the currently-available scientific knowledge. <BR>In the wake of this EFSA opinion, which confirms certain doubts that were expressed by ANSES in its May 2012 opinion in answer to publication of a study on the harmful effects of a sublethal dose of a neonicotinoid substance on bee behaviour, the Agency is calling for finalisation of the new European guideline which will update assessment of substances and plant protection products within the framework of reinforced regulations on health risks for bee colonies.<BR>Bee mortality: ANSES recommends reinforcing European plant protection product regulation and emphasises the need for a multifactorial approach to risks <BR>1st of June 2012<BR><BR>Cruiser OSR is a seed-dressing insecticide authorised for oilseed rape cultivation. It contains three active ingredients, including thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid-class insecticide. The results of a study published recently in the journal Science highlights the harmful effect of sub-lethal doses of thiamethoxam on the ability of forager bees to return to the hive. In this context, ANSES, in conjunction with its European counterpart EFSA, stresses the need to pursue research work in this area. It also calls for changes in the European regulations which would incorporate experiments enabling a better understanding of the sub-lethal effects of exposure to neonicotinoids into the process of plant protection product assessment. It also emphasises the need for a multifactorial approach to the risks in order to effectively counter the bee mortality phenomenon.<BR>Inauguration of the new building for the Plant Health Laboratory <BR>18 January 2012<BR>The ANSES Plant Health Laboratory (LSV), located in Angers at the heart of a “competitiveness cluster with global reach in plant sciences", today inaugurated its new building. This has been made possible thanks to funding from France's Ministry of Agriculture, the EU's Regional Development Fund (managed by the Prefecture of the Pays de Loire Regional Council), the Maine et Loire Departmental Council and the Greater Angers Loire Métropole Area, and will provide the working conditions needed to enable this National Reference Laboratory to maintain the scope and reliability of its work. It offers staff optimum working conditions while blending perfectly into the local environment. The new scientific area will be able to take in young researchers for training and welcome foreign delegations or staff from other national or European laboratories.<BR>Chlordecone: ANSES assesses the dietary exposure of young children in Guadeloupe<BR>12 September 2011<BR>As part of the investigations it has been pursuing since 2002 into the dietary risk associated with chlordecone, ANSES has especially been examining the dietary exposure of young children in Guadeloupe during their dietary diversification phase. The results of this study, which are published today, show that long-term exposure does not exceed tolerable toxicity thresholds. Regarding short-term exposure, the Agency's study emphasises the importance of respecting ministerial Orders governing marketing authorisations for foods.<BR>Incorporation of the Plant Health Laboratory for into ANSES<BR>12 January 2011<BR>The National Laboratory for the Protection of Plants was incorporated into ANSES on 1 January 2011, and was renamed the 'Plant Health Laboratory'. <BR>The unit for study of "resistance to phytosanitary products" has been incorporated into the Lyon laboratory<BR>20 May 2010<BR><BR>The French food safety agency today presented the activities of the “resistance to phytosanitary products" unit which was incorporated in 2009 into its laboratory for study and research on bovine diseases and meat hygiene.<BR>PNPPs (natural preparations of low concern): an information day on evaluation methods for these products <BR>20 January 2010<BR><BR>In preparation for deployment of the ECOPHYTO 2018 plan, the Ministry of Agriculture has requested an exploration of the methods for assessing the efficaciousness of PNPPs (natural preparations of low concern). The French Association for Plant Protection has created three working groups to study the topic in which AFSSA is highly involved. On January 15, the Agency organised an information and feedback day to review study results. <BR>Close-up on Cruiser: AFSSA issues a positive opinion but under strict conditions of use<BR>15 December 2009<BR>AFSSA received a request to assess the health risks and efficacy of the Cruiser 350 preparation, within the scope of the application for marketing authorisation (MA) for the product. In view of all the data provided by both the manufacturer and the observations made through the surveillance programme implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, and given the application's compliance with the various provisions of European regulations, AFSSA issued a positive opinion for the public authorities to grant an MA. The Agency has nevertheless restricted this positive opinion to a limited field of use under very strict conditions.<BR>Harmonisation européenne des limites maximales de résidus des pesticides : l'Afssa examine le niveau de protection des consommateurs<BR>22 octobre 2009<BR>Au 1er septembre 2008, une nouvelle réglementation européenne relative aux limites maximales de résidus (LMR) de pesticides dans les denrées est entrée en vigueur. A la demande de la Direction Générale de la Santé, l'Afssa a réalisé une comparaison des anciennes LMR nationales et des nouvelles LMR harmonisées au regard du niveau de protection du consommateur français.
