Biotechnology
The Expert Committee on Biotechnology assesses the health risks of foodstuffs containing or produced from genetically modified organisms intended for human or animal consumption. It also assesses the health risks of enzymatic preparations intended for human consumption. In this context, it undertakes the scientific assessment of regulatory dossiers and marketing requests for genetically modified organisms and enzymatic preparations.
The Expert Committee on Water assesses the health risks, for the general population and workers, related to the presence of microorganisms or chemical contaminants in drinking water, water for leisure purposes, wastewater and surface and ground water. It also assesses the safety of materials and items used in permanent facilities for the production, treatment and distribution of drinking water, as well as the safety and efficacy of products and processes for treating water (drinking water, wastewater, swimming pool water). It provides scientific and technical support for the drafting of national and European regulatory documents, technical manuals, protocols and reference standards. This Expert Committee assesses the risks to animals related to Transmissible Subacute Spongiform Encephalopathies, as well as the health risks of foodstuffs intended for human or animal consumption, with regard to these pathologies. The Committee's assessments thus include Specified Risk Materials, health control measures, monitoring programmes and the epidemiological changes in these pathologies, for both BSE and for TSSEs in small ruminants. The Committee also calls on the support of its “Epidemiology of animal TSSEs” working group.

Food contact materials
This Expert Committee assesses the health risks related to contact of materials with foodstuffs, in particular in the case of substance migration to the foodstuffs, including food packaging as well as cooking utensils and all materials used in the production and packaging of foodstuffs. It is consulted on the drafting of regulatory documents, on industrial dossiers for authorisation for the use of materials that do not require regulation harmonised at European level, on cleaning products and good hygiene practice guides for the agri-food industry.
This Expert Committee assesses applications for marketing authorisation for fertilisers and growing media and submits its opinions to the Minister of Agriculture who issues decisions, under the terms of Decree no. 2006-1177 of 22 September 2006.
This Expert Committee assesses microbiological and parasitological risks related to foodstuffs and their production processes. It is responsible for assessing industry dossiers within its sphere of competence (good hygiene practice guides and the application of HACCP principles, industrial processes, etc.) and drafting regulatory documents (transposition into French law of European Directives, Promulgation Orders and Decrees).

This Expert Committee assesses the nutrition risks, properties and the nutritional and functional benefits of substances and foodstuffs in the human diet, as well as dietary habits. It calculates nutritional values and issues recommendations on the themes of public health that fall within its field of expertise. It assesses applications from industry for authorisation relative to human nutrition (dietetic foods, fortified common consumer foods, novel foods and ingredients). It assesses national and European draft regulations related to nutrition. Lastly, it provides Ministries with the scientific information necessary for defining France's position during European discussions on issues related to nutrition.
