The conference usually takes place in countries with an interest in health problems linked to the consumption of shellfish. This year the conference was organized by Ifremer in cooperation with Afssa. The conference opening, by Jean-Yves Perrot, President of Ifremer, and Pascale Briand, Director-General of Afssa, was followed by a short press conference in the Cité Internationale des Congrès in Nantes.
About 60 presentations and nearly one hundred posters introduced the visitors to the latest scientific developments in shellfish safety. The themes covered 10 sub-topics: - Toxicology - Atypical toxicities and emerging toxins - Detection methods for marine biotoxins - Noroviruses and enteric viruses - Vibrions - Monitoring of toxic phytoplankton - Chemical contaminants - Risk assessment - Management and Regulation
Afssa and shellfish
Shellfish live in contact with water and the sea bed. Their safety for consumption therefore depends on water and sediment quality. In order to provide the consumer with healthy shellfish fit for consumption, the following actions are taken by Afssa:
1) Monitoring the presence of contaminants by mobilizing its national reference laboratories (NRLs) specialised in marine biotoxins, heavy metals and the molecular characterisation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus - Development of methods for detecting contaminants in shellfish; - Research to improve understanding of food contaminations (Vibrio parahaemolyticus, emerging marine biotoxins, etc.); - Scientific and technical support for risk managers and recommendations for the organisation of phytotoxin, micro-organism and chemical monitoring systems in production zones and marketed products.
2) Evaluating human health risks associated with the consumption of shellfish - Assessment of the risks linked to the presence of micro-organisms or chemical contaminants in shellfish; - Conducting studies to measure consumer exposure levels.
3) Protecting shellfish health - An “Animal Health” Expert Panel - In September 2008, creation of an “Oyster mortality and zoosanitary risks” Emergency collective expert assessment group.
