Alert on dog rabies sent to veterinarians
The threat is permanent, genuine and major

Afssa's recommendations to veterinarians

The regular and illegal introduction of dogs incubating rabies into our country is not a new phenomenon but is on the rise, despite new EC measures to check animals at the borders (Order of 20 May 2005 and EC Regulation 998/2003). Morocco is still the travel destination for which the number of cases of imported rabies is the highest.
Clinical signs of the disease can vary substantially and are sometimes very sketchy.
Rabies is transmissible during the entire period that the virus is excreted from the animal.
If not quickly and suitably treated in humans, a rabies virus infection ineluctably causes death, and sometimes after a long period of incubation.

Recommendations and reminders

It is recommended
· to systematically send any suspected case for rabies diagnosis, even if the suspicion seems low at first glance
· to consider as evocative of rabies any behavioural change in a dog which cannot undoubtedly be attributed to a disease, due to the polymorphism of rabies symptoms and the non-specificity thereof

Remember that
· euthanasia of a domestic carnivore that has bitten within the last two weeks is prohibited, except when authorised by the DDSV (Departmental Office of Veterinarian Services) when the proper safety conditions for maintaining this animal for observation do not exist
· a certificate from the animal's owner, certifying that the dog has not bitten within the last two weeks, that it has not been in contact with rabid animals or animals suspected of rabies and that it has not been abroad in the last six months provides indispensable information to be collected before euthanizing a dog. If the dog has travelled, the countries visited shall be mentioned.

Sending for rabies diagnosis

· in all départements, the DDSV is responsible for sending samples for diagnosing rabies
· in the event of a risk of contamination of a person or people (bites, scratches, contact with the animal's saliva), French regulations require the samples to be sent to the Institut Pasteur de Paris
· in all other cases, samples are sent to Afssa's laboratory: AFSSA - LERRPAS (Laboratory for studies and research on rabies and wild animal diseases), Domaine de Pixérécourt, 54220 Malzeville, France
