During 2007, the tonnage of antimicrobials sold in France increased by almost 7% to reach its highest level since 2001. It nevertheless remains below the sale tonnages observed in 1999, when the sales monitoring was set up. Over the 9 years of monitoring, the corresponding usage, expressed in mg of active principle per kg of animal body weight, increased by 13.4%.

As in the years prior to 2007, four families of antimicrobials (Tetracyclines, Sulfamides, _-lactamines and Macrolides) account for more than 80% of the tonnage of antimicrobials sold, with tetracyclines representing half of the total tonnage of sales alone.
Oral administration is the main method for taking veterinary medicinal products, making up almost 90% of sales tonnage every year. Parenteral administration accounts for around 10% and other methods (intramammary and external) represent a little over 1%.

For which animals are antimicrobial prescriptions intended?
Around 93% of the tonnage of antimicrobials sold is intended for production livestock, i.e. animals whose products are intended for human consumption. 1 to 2% of the tonnage of antimicrobials sold are administered to pets and 5 to 7% can be prescribed to both production livestock and pets.

What is the exact exposure of animals to antimicrobial treatments?
To answer this question, the tonnages have been converted into the number of treatments for medicinal products administered by intramammary or parenteral route and for some antimicrobials administered orally to production livestock. This has made it possible to confirm the significant increase in injectable treatments using Cephalosporines and Fluoroquinolones.

Why and how is this monitoring carried out?
Since 1999, the annual sales of veterinary medicinal products containing antimicrobials have been monitored by the French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV) in partnership with the Union for the veterinary medicinal product industry and reagents (SIMV). Based on the OIE guidelines for the “monitoring of the quantities of antimicrobials used in animal husbandry”, this work is part of the research carried out by the Agency on antimicrobial resistance.
It is conducted by sending a questionnaire to each marketing authorisation holder to gather sales figures on veterinary medicinal products containing an antimicrobial. This data is then linked with the data available at the ANMV (qualitative and quantitative composition, pharmaceutical form, capacity of presentations intended for sale, intended species and so on).
